Organizations Helping

The World Wildlife Foundation

One of the greatest advocates for the Siberian Tiger is the World Wildlife Foundation.  They divide the work they do into five main categories.

Monitoring Populations: The WWF monitors the Amur tiger populations in Russia and China.  In 2011 a Siberian Tiger was caught on camera in part of China for the first time ever, giving the WWF new information on the species’s range.

Protecting Habitats: The WWF secures conservation areas in both China and the Russian Far East for tiger habitat.  These habitats include both officially protected land and conservation leases.

Increasing Tiger Prey: The WWF works with hunting programs to protect wild boar, elk, and deer in the Russian Far East and China.  They also provide food for these animals to ensure that the tigers do not go hungry in the winter time.  They have also just begun a program in China to release a deer population.

Advocating for Improved Legislation: The WWF advocates for stronger laws and regulations to be put in place regarding hunting and logging of tigers and the forests they live in.  They also work to increase enforcement of these regulations by training their own personnel and working with local organizations as well.

Raising Public Awareness: The WWF works to spread the awareness about tigers and their importance in the world. They educate hunters about sustainable and educated hunting practices and also put on Tiger Day celebrations in local communities in China and Russia.

There are many efforts being made to protect the Siberian Tigers.  Although once no more than 20-30 individuals roamed the wild, now more than 550 individuals inhabit the Russian Far East (Amur Tiger, 2015).  The significant increase in population is largely due to the amazing efforts made by various organizations and nonprofits. Both the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), are currently working to protect the Siberian Tigers and and the habitat they live in.
